High Travel Season
The peak season for travel in Puerto Rico is from mid-December to mid-April when travelers from countries with cold weather seek for a little escape.
East & Metro Regions of Puerto Rico
Most major resorts are on the east and San Juan / North Region of the island and they are also the most marketed by travel booking agencies. Hotels on this part of the island are typically fully booked, so book your hotel in advance. Hotels that have not reached full capacity will often give last-minute deals to fill those rooms, so if you want to save money it may be worth waiting but may not have the most options.
West Coast Region of Puerto Rico
High season for the west coast is in the summer, hotels are fully booked, so book well in advance. The locals love the west coast of Puerto Rico since this region offers the most beaches and affordable, family-friendly hotels.
Vieques & Culebra
For these sleepy offshore islands, the busy travel season is in the winter months. However, even on a “busy” day, you’ll have the beaches to yourself. If you’re traveling on holiday, be sure to book well in advance, especially for Christmas.
Summer Season (High Season for Locals)
The summer months are the “high season” for Puerto Ricans. The islands of Vieques, Culebra, and the west coast are popular beach destinations for locals. The month of July has various Puerto Rican holidays and many festivities, hotels are typically fully booked and beaches are typically the most crowded especially on weekends.
Low Travel Season
Metro & East Coast of Puerto Rico
After Easter Week which goes all week long for Puerto Ricans, things start to slow down at the hotels on the resort communities on the east coast and metro area of the island.
West Coast of Puerto Rico
Low season on the west coast is the winter months, seasoned travelers head west to find great hotel deals and no crowds on the beaches.
Travel During Holidays in Puerto Rico
Flights to Puerto Rico are more expensive during the holidays, if you’re traveling on a holiday start looking for flights about 90 days before your desired flying dates. Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter week are really high travel times. The month of July has various holidays, and hotels around the entire island are typically fully booked.
Crowds
Having visited many USA beaches, crowded scenes are not the same in Puerto Rico. With about 300 miles of beaches around the island plus the islands of Vieques, Culebra, Caja de Muertos and the offshore nature reserves. There is plenty of sand for everyone and even on a busy beach day you can find an uncrowded beach spot.
The month of July and Easter week (Semana Santa) are the busiest beach months for locals. The islands of Vieques and Culebra offer seclusion even on the busiest day.
